This makes me very sad, ABBA is one of my favourite bands:
From Al Goodman CNN
MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- A drummer for the Swedish pop group ABBA has died after an apparent accident at his home in Spain, a Civil Guard spokeswoman said Monday.
Ola Brunkert was found dead late Sunday at his home in the town of Arta on Spain's Mediterranean island of Mallorca, the spokeswoman said.
Police believe Brunkert may have fallen against a glass partition separating his home's kitchen from the garden, and the glass broke and fatally cut his throat, she said.
He was found in the garden and is believed to have bled to death, she added. An official cause of death is pending until after an autopsy.
Brunkert, born in 1946 in Sweden, played drums on ABBA's first single, "People Need Love," according to Abba's official Web site.
He was not among the four best-known members of ABBA whose faces adorned the album covers -- Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Agnetha Faltskog -- but he was a key supporting musician for the group as it achieved stardom.
The group's hits included "Dancing Queen," "Waterloo," "Take a Chance on Me" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You."
"Ola toured with ABBA in 1977, 1979 and 1980," the official Web site said. "Together with bass player Rutger Gunnarsson, Ola is probably the only musician to appear on all ABBA albums -- he was one of the most frequently used Swedish session musicians during the 1970s."

(CNN) -- Science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, who co-wrote the epic film "2001: A Space Odyssey" and raised the idea of communications satellites in the 1940s, died Wednesday at age 90, an associate confirmed.
Clarke died early Wednesday at a hospital in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where he had lived since the 1950s, said Scott Chase, the secretary of the nonprofit Arthur C. Clarke Foundation.
"He had been taken to hospital in what we had hoped was one of the slings and arrows of being 90, but in this case it was his final visit," Chase said.
Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick shared an Academy Award nomination for best adapted screenplay for "2001."
The film grew out of Clarke's 1951 short story, "The Sentinel," about an alien artifact left on the moon.

Good idea for a thread... That's a shame about Arthur.C. Clarke. Even more shameful that I didn't know about it until your post. 2001 is one of the best movies ever made. Both of the genius' who helped create this masterpiece are gone, I'm extremely saddened.

DENVER, Co (CNN) -- My hopes of Bruce ever returning to this forum to guide us and teach us was found dead this morning in my apartment in downtown Denver.
Sources say my hopes had been waning for several weeks as I ceased taking medication and began accepting the possibility of an alternative creation theory.
My hopes of Bruce ever guiding us is survived by my wife and three kids aged 6, 11 and 14.

The Simpsons.
...
The Simpsons Banned In Venezuela
"The Simpsons" has been banned in Venezuela by President Hugo Chavez, because the animated TV show is "unsuitable for children."
The long-running cartoon has been replaced after Chavez deemed it contained "messages that go against the whole education of boys, girls and adolescents."
Elba Guillen, a spokesperson for Televen TV, the Venezuelan network that airs "The Simpsons," says, "It had to be taken off. The government considers it to be a series that isn't appropriate for that time because it isn't appropriate for children."

They said on U.S. radio today that your Simpsons time-slot is gonna be filled with Baywatch reruns. True?

^ I really like the focus on that sign, it makes me wonder. Elba Guillen, a spokesperson for Televen TV, the Venezuelan network that airs "The Simpsons," says, "It had to be taken off. The government considers it to be a series that isn't appropriate for that time because it isn't appropriate for children."
What does Elba G mean by not appropriate for "that time"? Do they mean it's not appropriate for this present time in history, or the timeslot in general? Well, nice excuse for a govt censorship ban anyways. With that excuse, why not just put it on later at night when the kids are asleep? Around here, I could understand (and wish the networks, not the govt, would implement) a time of day ban for a show like "Family Guy." It absolutely disgusts me that it's being aired around 5pm when my young neices and nephew can sneak chances to watch it. That's one show that should be kept away from the children... but the Simpsons? Gimme a break, that's just good, clean, satirical humour.

R.I.P George Carlin... It's a damn shame. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/24/arts/24carlin.htmlGeorge Carlin, the Grammy-Award winning standup comedian and actor who was hailed for his irreverent social commentary, poignant observations of the absurdities of everyday life and language, and groundbreaking routines like “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television,” died in Santa Monica, Calif., on Sunday, according to his publicist, Jeff Abraham. He was 71. The cause of death was heart failure. Mr. Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, went into the hospital on Sunday afternoon after complaining of heart trouble. The comedian had worked last weekend at The Orleans in Las Vegas.

For some reason, I just wasn't prepared for Geroge Carlin to die. He seemed like he would be around forever.
